Questions Week 4/5 The Celiac & Gluten Solution

  1. What was our core idea?

This app will help you understand and teach you if you have become gluten free, or have been diagnosed with celiac disease recently, and are struggling on which products would be the most suitable for you to consume and what you could not. This app would present many features to swipe between pages and the ability to scan a barcode on a certain product presenting a popup where it shows whether it contains wheat, rye, oats or  barley as you can tap on the icon to present the ingredients included in the product.

Example: this products ingredients, with a brief explanation on that certain product explaining one or some of that are not suitable for your own consumption on the list which the product contains like wheat, as the ingredients that you cannot consume would be underlined in red. Whereas the stuff that cannot do any harm wouldn't be underlined or highlighted.

  1. Is our solution clear?

= Yes, it is to help aid those who are troubled or lost on what products they can consume(eat) since they have suddenly developed gluten intolerance or have been diagnosed with celiac disease, or came to a realisation that your body cannot tolerate either one or both anymore. Others have changed to gluten free due to personal reasons like a gluten free diet etc. This app will aid with this giving/finding you information more quickly/efficiently.(just by scanning a barcode)

  1. What is our ideal end result?

= for this app to work the barcode scanner, the page changing(swiping), the giving of important information easily. As we are hoping for the whole project to come together and it to be published. And for many others to be able to use it to make their lives easier. This will really help people so they don't have to waste time searching for a list on the packaging, or searching it online hoping for a result or even just guessing the ingredients, which is not the best thing to do.

  1. Have other people faced the same problems?

= Yes, there are many people that are Gluten-free or have celiac disease, there are many many people in the world that are diagnosed or have come to a realisation that somethings not right. Not as many people who do have it understand what it is and what to look out for when cooking and buying a project. Some people just suddenly develop these problems and consume products containing ingredients to cause an allergic reaction and end up getting hurt in some way. People have had to stand there in a supermarket reading over the back of a product just to check, some products don't even have a list as this is where some of the problems start.

Advice notes from a mentor: (Meeting: 1)

More research and an argument and why would they use this, minimum things needed, what ingredients are not why do you think it is different? Why do people want to use what has the target that this app is for?

A doctor can tell the people that there is an app for their situation. Got to argue why this app is better. Persuade them. Present how it would look like. Can have a manual entry if the barcode doesn't work. So does a scan. Example of why. Makes different screens. Show off to others to get their opinion and overall designs. The Colour scheme so you could change the colours.

I would need to collect the information for

What it is

Who does it effect what to avoid

Where does it affect

Why did i create this app

Ethical Practice

 Team name: Emily Van Tongeren

Your school: Hornby High School

Title of your project: Gf Scanner

Ethical focus   What action will you take?

Informed and Voluntary

consent by those

Participating: Everyone Will have their identities kept secret, and would be thanked for their participation.

Privacy and

Confidentiality: All personal information will be kept secret and confidential, therefore no one else but themselves and I can see their information.

Avoidance of

unnecessary deception:  All products and information in the app will be personally checked over and have warnings when needed.

Social and Cultural

Sensitivity: From what i know of there won't be social and cultural sensitivity as everyone will be able to access and use the app, it's there to help those that need it and the color of your skin or your beliefs don't change anything.

Other things you are

thinking about in

relation to ethics: no one will be able to edit any information apart from their personal info and the only person who can change information is myself when there is an ingredient change or something similar to that.

Human Ethics Planning Template

Ethical focus What action will you take?

Research design: it is to have an app to help people with celiac or gluten intolerance/ free.

Information to any

participants (in research

related to your project): So this app is to help people with/that are celiac or gluten intolerance/ free. Especially that it's becoming a common thing and not everyone understands what it is and what they can and can't have.

Level of risk:

(Low/Medium/High, based on

likelihood of ethical breach and

consequence of it) There is a medium risk as ingredients can change on products but we will attempt to keep on top of it.

Permissions:  no human permissions, N/A or camera on phone

Respect for participants: each participant will be treated with the up most respect, we accept all beliefs and cultures, and everyone will be able to use and be treated the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

In businesses today we had a choice about what we can do, we could chose to do an FAQ's page or a crossword. I decide  to do a FAQ's page to challenge myself more. just bellow is what i have written.

Do Eftpos machines need internet access ?

Eftpos transactions require internet access and may need access to a mobile phone network. Cash may be beneficial if you don't have access to the internet. There are different Eftpos technical support for each bank. EFTPOS payments are quick to process and provide an instant proof of payment for you and your customer, which can help avoid disputes. If you’re a business that prefers cash payments you could consider using EFTPOS for high-value payments or offsite transactions to avoid keeping too much cash on the premises or while on the go. Customers find EFTPOS convenient as it means they don't have to carry large amounts of cash to pay for goods and services.

What do I need to open a checking account ?

When you open your account, you need to make sure you have a government-issued ID ( which can be things like Driver's license, Passport ect.)  to prove your identity. You’ll also need your Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, along with something that has your address on it, such as a utility or cable bill. Providing proof of address helps banks, governments and other organisations prevent fraud by verifying the identity of citizens. When it comes to banking, these measures are important in keeping your money and identity safe.

Why Do I Still Need a Pin ?

Not every shop will allow you to or have a contact less payment option. There are also limits on how much you can spend without entering a pin. So there are still going to be times when you’re going to have to make payments by swiping or inserting your card into the terminal, then using your PIN. There is a $200 limit you can spend in New Zealand without using your pin number. If you total is over the limit you will need to type in your pin

How do I know if a shop accepts contact less payments?

The screen on the EFTPOS terminal will tell you with words like ‘present card’ as opposed to swipe/insert card. You might also notice the contactless symbol on the terminal screen. Some shops/ companies have a sign or sticker out the front stating they have paywave.

Can having a card that can do contactless payments be dangerous ?

No, To understand why contactless payments are secure, it helps to know a bit about how they work. First and foremost, your card never leaves your hand, giving you full control during payment. The signals sent between your card and the terminal where you tap your card only travel very short distances making it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept.

But if you lose your card it is easy for whoever finds it to spend your money as long as it's under the limit therefore if you lose your card it would be best to lock it as soon as possible to stop others getting a hold of your money.

Market Day Reflection

In business we had been planning for market day and Holding a stall on the day. For market day we made and sold Candy Floss to Hornby high students, Hornby primary students and Some people/ parents from the Hornby community.

In business we learnt a few new skills such as, Food Preparation, Testing the products, how to make a contract, how to talk to customers and get them to buy our products, budgeting so we wouldn't lose money, and how to make

Three of our weaknesses were,

  1. Not having tape to hang up our signs this affected us by having to tell people constantly the prices of our product. If we had our signs up it would've made a difference by not having to stop and tell people the size and how much it costs.

  1. How long it took to full up a bag on the day with multiple orders, We didn't take into account that it take awhile to heat up the candy floss maker to cook the sugar to make it into candy floss, if we were to have the chance to make it again we would pre make some bags full of candy floss so we can keep up orders and not have to turn people away.

  1. Having gloves, we had to use some gloves from Miss Taylor which wasn't being responsible on our behalf as it's a part of food hygiene, if we get a chance to do it again next time we will bring more than one pair of gloves.

Three of our strengths were,

  1. The Candy Floss Machine , It was very handy that i had a candy floss machine so we didn't have to hire one, ours worked very well as it was one that worked and the only machine  that lasted the whole market day as the others overheated and stopped working.

  1. Working together, Both of us worked really well together, when one person was collecting the candy floss from the machine the other would take payment and hold open the bag, We had great communication which worked well in this situation.

  1. Making candy floss worked well for us as it is quite popular among kids and other people and isn't an everyday thing, the only problem we had was that other people had the same idea as us so we had some competition.

Overall I think my group did well for it being the first time working together for something like this and we had fun making candy floss and It was a good experience.

21st Centry essay

For the last two weeks, we have been writing an essay about technological advancements. My research was about the 21st century, this is to finish off the work we have been doing this term.

During the 21st century period, there were some significant technological advancements, some of their inventions were, birth control patches, Capsule endoscopy, e-cigarettes, and many more things. I am Quite interested in the medical and health side of advancements that is why I have chosen to teach you about those specific things. Especially because I know a lot about these inventions.

The birth control patch is a really good invention as people who forget to take pills and are afraid of needs

can still get contraception that doesn't last ages like over multiple years, this has really advanced and helped

teenagers and adults to get contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies The birth control patch is a thin, baggie, square patch that sticks to the skin. The way it works is that the patch releases a hormone into the skin to prevent pregnancy. The patch stops you from releasing an egg and without an egg, the male sperm can not fertilize. They recommend you apply the patch either on your bottom, your abdomen, your upper outer arm, or upper torso (not on your breasts). Ongoing studies show that the patch is as effective as taking the pill and 9 out of 100 couples get pregnant with the patch which is around about the same amount of people will get pregnant with the pill. It also depends on how good you are with changing it at the right time that is stated by your doctor or family planning nurse. Girls that weigh more than 198 pounds or 89.8 kgs are recommended to find different contraception as the patch won't work as effectively as it should and they will be at a higher risk of pregnancy. The different contraception has advanced more and moreover the years. The birth control patch is a safe and effective method of birth control. Most women who use the patch have no side effects. Smoking cigarettes while using the patch can increase a girl's risk of certain side effects which is why health professionals advise women who use the patch not to smoke.

The Capsule endoscopy is a procedure that uses a tiny wireless camera to take pictures of

your digestive system taking thousands of pictures that are transmitted to a recorder you wear on a

belt around your waist. The capsule endoscopy helps doctors out a lot. Traditionally with an endoscopy,

you get put to sleep and they put a tiny wire with a camera on a record going around and take samples

of your small intestine and stomach. Due to now having a capsule version people won't be put to sleep

unless they can't swallow a pill or prefer to have a standard endoscopy done. The estimated average

price for capsule endoscopy is $2,662 and a standard endoscopy cost around $1,224 but if you have

health coverage/ health insurance they may cover part of the cost. This, therefore, shows how significant this technology is for the twenty-first century.

E-cigarettes are a battery-powered device that works by heating up the liquid into an aerosol which changes the liquid into smoke that you can inhale and exhale. The e-cigarettes liquid usually contains nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and other chemicals. Nicotine is an addictive substance found in cigarettes and other tobacco products. E-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA as a quit smoking aid. So far, the research shows there is limited evidence that e-cigarettes are effective for helping smokers quit. There are other proven, safe, and effective methods for quitting smoking. One way to start is to talk with your doctor, nurse, or a trained quitline counselor to figure out the best strategies for you. Depending on what e-cigarette you get the cost can be different. Single-use, disposable e-cigarettes cost anywhere from $1 to $15 each or more. Rechargeable starter kits with multiple pods can cost anywhere from $25 to $150 or more. You can also buy liquid refills for kits at around $50 to $75 monthly This, therefore, shows how significant this technology is for the twenty-first century.

In summary, I think that the birth control patch and capsule endoscopy has helped out a lot in the

medical field whereas the e-cigarette I personally think it has made it easier and cheaper for drug

addicts and smoking addicts or people who like to smoke. Overall we have improved a lot in some

fields which has really helped our economy and world a lot and some of the advancement haven't

help people out for the better of the world and their own health  This, therefore, shows how significant this technology is for the twenty-first century.

Gluten-Free App

This is a certificate for compleating an hour of code for app design off code.org.

I have also been working on getting things together to design my app down below is some information

An App Idea and why

A gluten-free app that can scan barcodes and tell you if it's gluten-free or not. A big problem in society

at the moment is every day more people are diagnosed with celiac disease or becoming gluten-free/

intolerant. The concept of my idea to be able to help those who don't know much about celiac/

gluten-free to learn about it and use the app to assist them in buying products so they don't potentially

poison themselves.

Conception and design

Decide what your solution will be: the problem is not everyone knows what product have wheat in

it or not and could potentially poison themselves

What it will do: this app will be able to scan the barcode of a product and state if it has wheat barley

rye or oats in it which harms people that are gluten-free/celiac.

what your key stand out features will be and why: the scanner itself as without it would be pointless.

how you think you might create it: I'm not 100% sure if there is a software I can use to create it on

but I'm hoping I can find out what to use to create it.

Cooking Timeline

Today in cooking class we where to complete a timeline from the past on the topic of food in New Zealand. I have selected the dates below.

1800s the first signs of an established NZ eating pattern became evident Meat and 3 veg. The tradition of Sunday Roasts begun.

1840 food supplies were limited depending on the region in which you lived.

1870 first coal range was made locally which was larger the method for cooking in the day.

of workers day “smoko” a break hard fought by the workers.

1882 morning teas needed to keep the manual labourers well energized and often consisted on baked goods like scones.

1900s baking had begun to be more lavish with such items as sponges, pikelets, ginger kisses, afghans and gems.

1920 most homes were equipped with the first electric or gas ovens.

1930s  ladies afternoon tea parties were in full swing during the Depression as a cheaper alternative to dinner parties

the 1930's came with the great depression – shortage in jobs meant people had little money to buy food. Soup kitchens were started and such dishes as the Shepherds Pie came about as a way to use leftovers

1950 NZ did a lot of bottling chutney and preserve making

1950 Watties canneries began operating and is still a major manufacturer today.

The 1958 first supermarket opened in Auckland with the second one opening in 1961.

1971 first KFC opened in Auckland

1980’s technological advances in equipment and in the processing and packaging of food had a huge influence on hour diet.

1990 due to greater communication and scientific research there was a greater consciousness about food related

to health issues and Vegetarianism was now firmly

established as a way of eating and widely accepted.

Starting Up A Business

Today in business we looked at are results for our Candy Floss Confetti shop, in this shop we sell candy floss and fizzy drinks, as the person that had the results was away so we where unable to write about them so instead we wrote about what we could no matter the results. we are doing candy floss because its something we don't have everyday and its a treat and Because our audience include primary School students. Below are what our questions where and our answers to them as well as our logo.

Do you like candy floss?

If the answer would be yes, we would carry on with our plan but if

the answer would be no, then we’d have to change our plan and find another

product to provide for the day.

How much are you willing to pay for candy floss?

It doesn't affect us as much with how much people are willing to pay

as we have different options to choose for what you want and it's very

cheap for us to get and create our product.

Does the color of the candy floss matter?

This question was asked to determine whether or not people had

a preference for a certain color or if there was a more ‘popular’ color.

This wouldn’t affect us at all as it gives us more options to

choose from for colors.

If yes what colors?

People will give their opinions and we can get the 2 most popular

colors and make that color candy floss.

How much would you be willing to pay for fizzy?  $2

This question wouldn’t affect us much because this is there

to give us options on how much a person is willing to pay.
