Bush Fires & Fire Safety

Bush Fires/ Fire Safty

1. How do bush fires start and how has climate change made them more common?

Climate change has helped Increasing heat by changing rain and snow patterns and shifts in plant communities and other climate-related changes have vastly increased the likelihood that fires will start more often and burn more intensely and widely than they have in the past.

There are lots of possible bushfire causes. They can start naturally when lightning strikes and ignites dry plants and trees. But they can also be caused by people, for example, by someone not extinguishing their campfire properly or even someone throwing their cigarette that hasn't been put out.

2. What are 3 ways you could fireproof your house if you lived in an area likely to get bush fires?

  1. Invest in Fire-Resistant Glass for Your Windows. (Protection levels are measured in defined time periods from 30mins up to 120mins.)

  2. Rethink Your Deck's Materials. ( fireproof mats/ what it is made of etc)

Make sure dry leaves etc are cleaned up and removed from the property

Invest in getting sprinkles on your roof and surrounding trees in case of fire.

Invest in fire extinguishers and have some in a handy spot to grab and use when needed

3.  When something burns it combusts, what is the difference between complete and incomplete combustion?

When a fuel undergoes complete combustion, it releases the maximum amount of energy from the fuel being reacted. Incomplete combustion is also a reaction between oxygen and fuel but the products are carbon monoxide, water, and carbon.

4. what should u do in a fire if it's inside your home.

Raise an alarm/ Shout FIRE FIRE FIRE

Get down Get Low and get out, Get down onto the floor as low as you can and crawl/ army crawl out/ or walk if you cant get down low and go out the nearest exit. Cover your mouth and nose with someone so it prevents as much smoke as possible. close the doors as your leaving to help prevent the fire from spreading faster. when out of the house go to your emergency meeting spot. call your emergency number and say there's a fire in your home / surrounding homes and let people know in your neighbor hood if possible for example next-door neighbors

Call your emergency number (in New Zealand it's 111)
